Tour Highlights

The Upper Dolpo Trek is an incredible journey that teleports you to one of Nepal's most remote and unscaled regions in the Far West Himalayas. This secluded area, which lies at the historic trade route around Western Nepal and Tibet, was once busy with traders exchanging salt and goods across the great passes. Today, it gives a fine glimpse into the clear landscapes and ancient Tibetan-influenced culture, which has mainly remained unphased for centuries. The trek starts with the flight from Kathmandu to Jhupal, with a brief layover at Nepalgunj, a vibrant city located on the southern plains of the Terai. From Jhupal, the adventure unfolds as you move through the rugged trails, passing through dense green forests, arid valleys, and high-altitude terrain plateaus. One of the trek highlights is reaching the mesmerizing Shey Phoksundo Lake, renowned for the crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounding the cliffs and pine forests. The close Ringmo village gives a rare cultural experience, with traditional Tibetan Buddhist practices and a rare lifestyle.

As the journey progresses, trekkers encounter some of the close trail's most challenging yet rewarding sections. Crossing through the Kang La Pass, an altitude of 5,350 meters, is a thrilling expatiate that tests stamina and spirit, but the breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-filled peaks make every effort worthwhile. Moving on from the past, you reach the sacred Shey Gompa, a centuries-old monastery that works as a spiritual centre in the region. The peaceful environment at the Gompa is set against the backdrop of the Dolpo's dramatic landscapes, giving a moment of reflection and relaxation. Continuing deeper through the Upper Dolpo, the trek goes through the calm valley of Dho Tarap, a delicate green area that contrasts starkly with the rugged terrain encountered earlier. The beautiful village of Tokyu, with its age-old stone houses and fine fields, provides a glimpse at the resilient and resourceful lifestyle of the Dolpo people. This trek is an excellent journey through one of the last remaining strongholds of ancient Tibetan culture, offering an immemorial experience of natural beauty, solitude, and cultural settings that will leave you with memories to cherish for a long time.
