Passport
The first legal document that every guest must carry while travelling to Nepal or any other nation is a legal and a valid passport.
What is a Passport?
A passport is a travel document issued by the Government to its citizens for the sole purpose of international travel. It is a document that provides identification of the visitor, especially that certifies his identity and nationality.
A passport bears the information of the holder like the traveller's name, date and place of birth, photograph, signature, and other relevant information that verifies his identity.
Visa
Besides a passport, the second major document that a traveller must always bear with him/her is a visa. There are two types of vis required while visiting Nepal; a Tourist Visa and a Transit Visa.
Tourist Visa
A foreigner travelling to Nepal will be granted a Tourist Visa for a maximum of 150 days in a visa year. Visa year refers to the months between January and December.
A visitor departing Nepal before the expiry of his term in Nepal will not be allowed to use his remaining days by adding it another year.
However, a guest who enters the country at the final days of a visa year may be allowed to stay over the next year, but the fees for the visa will be calculated as per the visitor's days of stay.
Although visas are granted at the point of entry, nationals from some countries are expected to acquire before entering Nepal. They are,
- Nigeria
- Zimbabwe
- Ghana
- Ethiopia
- Cameroon
- Swaziland
- Liberia
- Iraq
- Palestine
- Somalia
- Afghanistan
- Syria, and
- Refugees with travel documents.
Fees Required
A Single Entry Tourist Visa in Nepal costs about US $60 for 60 days or any other equivalent foreign currency. For Multiple Entry Visa, an additional $50 charge is added to the previous cost.
Visa extension in Nepal requires an additional $30 for 30 days and can be extended up to 150 days.
According to Nepal Immigartaion the fees for visas in Nepal are as follows:
- 15 days - $30 (USD)
- 30 days - $50
- 90 days - $125
Transit Visa
This type of visa is issued for travellers who are just passing by through the countries' airport without going through passport control. Such type of visas is issued for the passengers of the aircraft, and the employees (driver, pilot, crew member, steward) of the vessel including aircraft, trucks, trains, buses and many others.
Travellers who have entered Nepal airport while travelling to other countries will be granted a Transit Visa for one day. However, the foreigner must have a valid plane ticket.
Gratis Visa
This type of travelling document is issued for free in case the applicants are:
- Children below 10 years (invalid in the case of US citizens),
- SAARC citizens (except Afghanistan) for 30 days for their first-time visit to Nepal in the visa year,
- Non-Residental Nepalese, and
- Chinese people.
Where to apply for a Visa?
Visa of Nepal can be easily attained at the entry points on arrival to Nepal from the immigration officials provided the guest has other legal documents, like
- a valid passport and
- two passport size photos
Further, the foreigner must pay the required fees in US dollars for attaining the visa. The Department of Immigration, however, authorizes business visas.
