Introduction to Gulmi District

Coffee and orange cultivation are famous in the Gulmi District. Gulmi is rich in natural resources like cobalt, and its natural beauty draws visitors. Tourists and locals alike enjoy the local celebrations of Maghe Sankranti and other festivals.

Bichitra Cave in Dhurkot, Resunga, with its rich biodiversity and historical significance and the religious and historical sites Gyawa Kshetra, Charpala, Musikot, Isma, Wami Taksar, and Purtighat, are all worth seeing. Ruru, today is also known as Ridi, is a market town with several temples.

Orange production is well-known in Dhurkot's rural municipality wards 1 and 2, Nayagaun and Pipaldhara. They sell more than ten crores (100 million) rupees worth of oranges in Nepal's primary market and export oranges to India.

Tamghas, a tiny village at the foot of two hills, Resunga and Arjun, houses the district government offices. Tamghas was the earliest municipality in Gulmi, according to history. There are ten rural municipalities in total, including the towns of Resunga and Musikot.

History of Gulmi

Gulmi is a tiny mountainous district in western Nepal that plays an integral part in Nepal's history. It is located on the northern border of the Lumbini zone in the western Development area. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word "gulma," which meaning "military regiment" or "containment."

During the Lichchhabi and Malla eras, it was a significant military force. There was formerly an army unit stationed here. Gadhigulma, on the Gandaki River, existed in the Lichchhabi era. Gulmi Charpala, previously known as Gulmi Kot, is a location. It was given the name Gulmi based on the preceding.

Holy Places in Gulmi District

There are two prominent sacred places in the Gulmi district. They are:

  • Resunga
  • Ridi

Resunga

Resunga is a holy site in the region and one of Nepal's most beautiful hills to visit. Resunga, which is 2347 meters above sea level, is a 3-4 hour hike from Tamghas, the district seat. A rocky route - suitable for tiny 4-wheelers - leads almost to the summit.

One may get a beautiful 180-degree panorama of snowcapped mountains from the view tower, including Mount Dhaulagiri and the Terai lowlands. The site's features include a spiritually famous Yagyashala (fireplace), ancient temples, ponds, and an observation tower.

Resunga hosts the annual holy festivals Harisayani Ekadashi (end of June), Saune Aunsi (mid-August), and Haribodhani Ekadashi (mid-October).

Ridi

Another sacred site Ridi, also known as Ruru Kshetra, is a holy site near the confluence of the Ridi Khola and the Kali Gandaki rivers. During the Makar Sakranti festival in mid-January, thousands of Hindu pilgrims from Nepal and India pay tribute to Lord Rishi Keshav at Ridi.

Ridi is the site of the region's largest annual fair. Mukunda Sen, King of Palpa, has founded the most renowned temple here, the Rishikesh Mandir. The temple has undergone many modifications and has lost its original form.

Tamghas in Gulmi District

The administrative centre of the district is Tamghas, which is located in Gulmi District. Tamghas is a tiny village nestled between the Resunga and Arjun hills. Tamghas was the first municipality in Gulmi to be formed. Natural resources abound in the city, particularly cobalt.

Because it is the city's headquarters, it has access to most of the city's amenities. Education, health, power, road access to the rest of the country, and a police station are all accessible, attracting many people from Gulmi villages to make Tamghas their home.

How can you Reach Gulmi?

Tamghas is located 380 kilometres from Kathmandu Valley and takes around 11 hours to arrive. Butwal, another significant city, is 115 kilometres from the city and takes 3 to 4 hours to reach. Tamghas is devoid of an airport. Baglung Airport, also known as Bhairahawa Airport, is located near the city.

From the airport, regular buses and taxis are available to take you to Tamghas. Yeti Airlines, Nepal Airlines, and Buddha Air have all operated flights to Bhairahawa from Kathmandu and other regions of Nepal. The months of October to December and February to April are ideal for visiting this location. When the sky is clear, and there are no clouds in the way of the stunning vista of Tamghas.
